Make a difference: College Mexico Mission trip 2010
Dates: July 31 – August 7
Leaders: Carol and Dirk Damonte
Cost: $850
A Mexico Mission Trip for college age students....How awesome does that sound? It will be a reunion of friends, a chance to change the world (again for many of us), do something different in the middle of the summer, and reconnect with LAUMC. This trip will remind you of the power of community, the sacredness of friendships, and the reason we believe in this great God we follow. Oh, what a time it will be! Comments from college students who attended sessions of Financial Peace University in last summer:
"I feel so lucky to have participated in Financial Peace University as a college student and young adult. I am only just starting to accumulate some money of my own, and Dave Ramsey's program has clearly identified all the common money mistakes that I can now avoid. I have an entirely new outlook on spending and saving, and feel optimistic about how to make my money work for me. His DVDs are not simply dry instructional talks, but entertaining and witty lessons in financial planning. I am so glad I took this class!" College Student — member of LAUMC
"As a dirt poor college student and former shopaholic, money just seemed to slip through my fingers faster than you could say Coco Chanel. I thought I understood budgeting and planning, but I never had an interest in saving up money, because what's the point of having money hidden away in a bank when you could be walking around in those new Dolce Vita boots? This is where Financial Peace University comes in. My mom dragged me with her to the first class, and from that day forward my entire view of financial managing was changed. For the first time, I understood that my money should work for me, not the other way around. Now, I have a very comfortable savings cushion, haven't overdrawn my account since I took the class, and am saving up very successfully for a semester abroad in London. I owe all my current financial smarts and peace of mind to Financial Peace University." College Student — member of LAUMC
"Financial Peace University was an enormous help to me. This is just plain old good advice. The simplified budgets taught me a brand new way to look at my financial responsibilities as a young adult. Dave Ramsey shares information that you probably haven't heard (or are likely to) elsewhere. Best of all, the principles I learned in this class taught me that even if I don't have a lot of money, I don't have to be broke." College Student — friend of LAUMC
Bible Study
Tuesdays, June 15–August 3, 7:30pm, Youth Room
Journey through the epistle of James as we study what steadfast faith means and how we should work to let it take over our lives day by day. In nine weeks and in a loving and supportive community, we will explore what James meant when he said "faith without works is dead." Although you'll get the most out of the class if you are at all sessions, we welcome you to whatever classes you can attend throughout the study. Contact Chelsea Temple (chelseatemple@laumc.org) with any questions.
Book Group
Thursdays, June 17–August 12, 7:30pm, Live Oak Room
Chelsea Temple will lead this group in a discussion of the book Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne. Come explore what it means to live out the radical message of Jesus in the 21st century. Discover how one follower has tried to live and share God's love and examine how we can heal our world through love.
Chelsea says, "The reason why I thought that book would be a good idea is because it is heavily based in the doxology of 'God is love', and than takes that doxology and shows how one person is trying to radically live it out. It's a message that I think goes along strongly with LAUMC's focus on God's love and transforming that into social activism, so people will be receptive to it (hopefully). It also is very challenging and convicting so people won't find it too repetitive or find that it allows room for complacency."
