Join us and take steps to wipe out Alzheimer's!

It's time to launch our plans for the 2008 Northern California Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk on Treasure Island! In 2007 LAUMC had 175 registered walkers and raised over $75,000, earning our third title as Top Community Team in the country. Let's continue our leadership in this important cause — here's how you can participate:

Walk or sponsor a walker — The Treasure Island Memory Walk is October 11. Come enjoy an easy walk, great company and stunning views. Register or donate online now by clicking here. Watch for Information/Registration tables after worship beginning September 21. You can also walk on your own in the Silicon Valley walk in San Jose on September 20. Be sure to let them know the funds you raise will go to the LAUMC team.

Come to a special Coffee Hour hosted by our '08 Memory Walk Team on Sunday, August 24. We'll have special treats and lots of information to share.

Tea at the Parsonage will be Saturday, September 13, with proceeds supporting our team. We will not have sales tables this year. Reserve tickets for this popular event by calling the church office (650-948-1083 x125) or purchase tickets online at www.njcreates.com — just click "Tea at the Parsonage 2008" on the right. You can also sponsor a ticket for someone who would not otherwise be able to attend.

Memory Cake Walk — Mark your calendar for this fun annual event at Homecoming on September 7. Come for fun, music, and delicious prizes while you help in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. We need volunteers to bake desserts for this event! If you can help, contact Becky Everett (RAEverett@aol.com; 650-961-0654) or Jennie Madlem (jmadlem@aol.com; 650-961-7024).

Parents' Night Out — Starfire youth will support the Memory Walk with their popular Parents' Night Out in the Children's Center — stay tuned for the date and details.

Support individual fundraising events and let us know if you are planning a special event or activity to raise funds. So far Karen Van Buren will be receiving donated items to sell on eBay or Craigslist, with the proceeds supporting our team. She welcomes easily mail-able items in good or vintage condition as well as any newer electronics. Contact Karen with questions (karen@vanburen.us). Nancy Jenks plans to offer several paper crafts workshops in late August and/or September — see www.njcreates.com/workshops for details as they are available.

UMCOR Disaster Relief

Throughout the year, you can contribute to the disaster relief in the U.S., Taiwan, Turkey, Central America, South America and elsewhere through UMCOR.

During the year, emergency requests are made to meet the needs of unexpected or emergency situations. There are several ways to contribute to disaster relief through UMCOR.
  • Use the UMCOR Emergency Offering envelopes found in the Sanctuary and make your checks out to LAUMC and in the notes section write Disaster Relief.
  • Drop off your cash donation at the church office.
  • Visit the UMCOR webpage and donate online.
100% of all donations go toward helping people affected by tragedies.

Rebuilding Together

LAUMC has organized teams of 20-30 people to repair the homes of low-income families in the South Bay as part of Rebuilding Together days. Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April) matches up needy families with work teams from a variety of organizations. LAUMC has typically participated in the Project Day that occurs in late October. Past projects have included a wide variety of tasks that are suitable for a group with varied skill levels, including: painting, cabinets, yard clean-up, stairs, porches, electrical, plumbing and other tasks. In just one day, the team can make a lasting difference in the life of a low-income family. For more information, contact Leslie Carmichael at carm-lee@pacbell.net or (650) 941-0260. Also refer to www.rebuildingtogether-sv.org.

The next Rebuilding Together project day will be Saturday, October 25, 2008. We are looking for volunteers to join a team that will repair the home of a low-income homeowner in San Jose. All skill levels are welcome. View the 2008 flyer.

Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley

Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley is currently finishing 6 homes in San Jose on Murphy Street, working Tuesdays through Sundays, 8:00am to 4:00pm, except 10:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday. The six home Gianera Street project in Santa Clara is only open on Saturdays. The 2nd Women Build project will begin this fall at Delmas Street in San Jose.

For more information, contact Dave Ahn at (650) 725-5320 or dahn@stanford.edu. Also refer to our web site www.habitatsiliconvalley.org. Dave tries to get out to the work site most Saturdays and has a standing offer for anyone to join him.

Buck-a-Month

On the second Sunday of each month, a local agency supported by LAUMC receives a contribution from members. To find out about this month's Buck-a-Month agency, please download the current issue of the Good News. You can donate to the Buck-a-Month agency every second Sunday of the month before and after the morning worship services.
