"What Does the Lord Require of You" Workshop

On Saturday, September 26th, the Reconciling Task Force sponsored an interactive program designed for all within the LAUMC community to learn about what it means to become a reconciling church. This half-day workshop, which was held in the LAUMC sanctuary, was focused on providing attendees insight, information and a thoughtful and caring environment to engage in dialogue around our reconciling discernment process and the impact this path will have on our church.

Speakers

  • Keynote: Rev. Phillip Lawson, retired pastor from Easter Hill UMC in Richmond. Rev. Lawson was active in the civil rights movement in the 1960's and shared the parallels he has experienced between the black civil rights movement and the LGBT movement.
  • Ed Brackenbury, a respected clinical therapist and licensed Marriage Family Therapist, led a panel discussion on the Gay/Christian experience within the Christian community.
  • Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kuan, Associate Professor of Old Testament at the Pacific School of Religion, gave a presentation entitled "The Biblical Dilemma: What does the Bible say about homosexuality? How do we respond as Christians and as Methodists?"
  • A panel discussion on the ramifications of becoming a reconciling church, which included: how does reconciling impact our status within the Methodist denomination, what will the church do differently, etc. The panel included members from other local UMC churches, some of which have recently gone through the process and others that have been reconciled for over 10 years.
